Ministry proposes turnover-based fines up to 3% for data leaks

MOSCOW, Dec 14 (PRIME) -- Russia’s Digital Development Ministry is discussing a bill to impose fines on companies for personal data leaks amounting to up to 3% of their turnover with representatives of the IT industry, Minister Maksut Shadayev said on Wednesday in a statement.

“The Digital Development Ministry has drafted a bill introducing turnover-based fines. It stipulates heavy penalties, up to 3% if a company fails to keep data safe,” Shadayev said.

He added that there is a serious problem now with leaks of personal information and the turnover-based fines up to 3% will push firms to invest much more in their security.

The ministry also offers to take into consideration mitigating evidence for firms.
